*In the 1800's blacksmiths learned their trade by becoming an apprentice to a master blacksmith. This usually started at age 12 or thirteen.

*The 1850 census shows 15 blacksmiths working in Bath
Township (where Hale Farm & Village is now located).

*Blacksmiths were not always men.
Census records show that there were also female blacksmith, although few in number.
