The first day of September was
another short travel day, so I stopped for an hour or so at the Heceta Lighthouse and took a tour. I stopped later in the
day at an overlook of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. The sign at the
overlook explained that most of the sand in these dunes (and there is a lot of it) came
from the Cascade Mountains many, many years ago. Wind, water and glaciers eroded the
mountains and ground the rock into fine grains of sand. The rivers then carried the sand
to the sea and the currents carried them to shore. The sand grains then dried on the
beaches and were moved inland by the wind.
I ended this day 8 miles south of Reedsport at
the Biker/Hiker campground at Tugman State Park, where I again encountered Joorn.
