Due to my decision to visit the Black Canyon
of the Gunnison, the next day (10-26) was long and ugly. It was about 94 miles and 7½
hours riding time, which is a lot when the sun sets at 6:30. The first half of the ride
was along the Colorado River, so it was fairly level, although I was going upstream. It
was also very pretty. (Photos 19,20) The second half was along I-70, which was mostly easy
riding, but awfully boring. I stopped for the night at a motel in Fruita, Colorado. I
wondered, but didnt find out, if it had been settled by Mormon pioneers as had
Fruita, Utah. From Fruita, it is about 12 miles to Grand Junction, then into the mountains
if you continue east. Im turning south at Grand Junction, however, so Ill
avoid the mountains of Colorado as I believe I will return to Moab by the same route.. |
