The following day I said goodbye to the Valley of Death and headed through Panamint Valley for Ridgecrest and points west. I didn’t get to see nearly all of the National Park, but did manage to see Zabriskie Point (I think there was a movie by that name), the remnants of Harmony Borax Works (the first successful borax plant in the valley), some nice sand dunes near Stovepipe Wells, and of course, the beautiful mountains.

On my way to Ridgecrest, I was passed by one of the ghosts of Death Valley. I didn’t actually see it, but I knew it was there. A Sport/Utility vehicle passed me with a bicycle on top (presumably one of the people who rode in the valley yesterday or last night). The pedals on the bicycle were going around and around at just about the same cadence as I was peddling. Like I said, I couldn’t really see it, but there was some apparition sitting on that bike saddle working real hard to finally get out of the valley.

For the night, I’m in a motel in Ridgecrest where I expect to send home the next installment of my journal before I go to bed. I managed to make up the day I lost (getting to Pahrump) by going from Furnace Creek to Ridgecrest in two days instead of three.
