November 1, 1999

Today’s the first day of November, and I’m beginning to count road-kill for the weird people at the home station (WNEO) – something to do with education. I’m trying to constantly glance left and right, while still trying to spend enough time looking ahead to avoid becoming one myself. Anyway, here’s today’s result: Cat (4), Deer (6), Big Alligator (3), Elk (1), Porcupine (1), Badger (1), Skunk (7), Rabbit (1), and Banana Peel (1). Hardly any of it was fresh stuff. I think the unsuccessful hunters must have gleaned the highways last night so they wouldn’t have to go home empty-handed ("Honey, we’re home. I got a deer, and little Joey found, I mean shot, his first porcupine"). It may be a new meaning for the term "Hunter-Gatherer." Don’t worry, I promise not to record this in my journal every day.

I saw my first truckload of Christmas trees today. Just think, sometime in mid-December, someone will buy one of these beneath a sign that says "Fresh Cut Christmas Trees".

I’m in the recreation room at a nice campground just outside the entrance to Mesa Verde National Park. I’ll be able to spend the whole day there tomorrow, then head for Arizona the following day.
