I looked around the town of Conway the next morning (5-6) before departing for Laconia.  It and it’s sister towns of North Conway, East Conway and Central Conway (honest) are in the midst of the White Mountains resort area of New Hampshire.  Of course, it’s still a little early for the “season” here, so it was anything but crowded.

Two of the more interesting structures in the town of Conway are its covered bridges.  One, over the Saco River (1890), is on a secondary road and still open to traffic (with a restricted weight limit).  I rode over this one after removing my rear panniers and emptying my pockets. The other, over the Swift River (1869), is closed to traffic. I take it that New Hampshire has lots of remaining covered bridges as these were listed as numbers 47 and 48 on their markers.

As I left town, I could see snow on the mountains of the Presidential Range about 30 miles to the north. I’ve seen some snow on a couple of other mountains this week, but only on ski slopes where it was packed quite deep until a few weeks ago.  This snow on the Presidential Range, however, was fresh, covers the whole top of the mountain, just came down last week while I was in Connecticut, stuff.  And my Mother wanted to know if I was going to ride to the top of Mt. Washington (6288’) – Ha!

It was warm and sunny in the morning, but had started sprinkling by the time I got to Meredeth.  It was only ten more miles to Laconia, but I didn’t want to get everything wet, so I took a “rain delay” on the porch of a clothing store.  An hour later, it had stopped raining; another half-hour later the road was sort of dry, and I decided to head for Laconia.  I covered most of my gear with plastic – just in case.  I got almost a mile before it started sprinkling again.  I just put on my rain suit and kept riding.  It stopped soon, but the road was wet all the way to Laconia.
