I
had another fairly long climb coming out of Bradford the next
morning (5-15), then a nice downhill to Kinzua Dam and Reservoir
where the Allegheny River is dammed for flood control.

Shortly
thereafter, I saw two women walking along the highway.
As I approached, one bent down, picked up something and put it in a
large plastic bag she was carrying. In
a moment, it hit me this was Ivy and her friend (whos name Ive
forgotten) who were mentioned on a sign I had just passed as the Adopt
a Highway people for litter control on that section of the road.
I have passed thousands of those Adopt a Highway signs in
just about every state, but this was the first time I had actually seen
anyone out picking up trash. Way to go Ivy and _____!
Late
in the day, near Titusville, I saved some dumb dogs life. (Actually, dumb should apply to the dogs owner for
not properly training the dog.) As
I was pedaling uphill (i.e., not too fast), an old Boxer came out of a
garage and started across the highway toward me.
There was a car coming pretty fast the other way downhill, so I
jumped off my bike and yelled at the dog to stay.
He looked perplexed at this sudden change in events, but he stopped
just a couple of feet out onto the road, and the car went around him.
I called him stupid dog and told him to go home.
He did.
I
was thinking about spending the night in Titusville, but didnt find
suitable accommodations (Im real close to home now, so Im even
getting picky about the quality of my motels), so I rode on to Oil City.
So Gary, just how close to home are you? Answer - less than 150
miles.
