May 13, 2000

The following day (5-13) was a ride to Wellsville, New York.  Now, I’ve been to Wellsville on several occasions (business related), but I never arrived from the east before and I never arrived on bicycle before.  Some things don’t change, however, as I spent the night at good old Cook’s Motel right across the road from ABB Air Preheater.

The day started off dry, but a little hazy.  By the time I got to Corning where I stopped for breakfast, the clouds were starting to look a bit more serious.  Near Greenwood, I stopped briefly under a church entry for a passing shower, then sped downhill to the town of Greenwood where I hid out in a grocery store for an hour and a half while it rained quite hard.  About 5:30, the rain stopped and I took off for Wellsville.  The sun was shining by the time I got there.

After I got settled in at the motel, I called Jim Cronin, an old friend from Air Preheater, and invited him out for a beer or two.  He picked me up at the motel and took me to Texas Hots, a place of local renown.  We had a great time talking about lots of old friends and old business.  Jim grabbed the check before I could get to it and wouldn’t let me pay.  He also gave me a new dollar coin that had been blessed with holy water from Lourdes to help keep me safe on the rest of my journey.  Thanks Jim - and I’ll keep that coin with me long after this journey has ended.
