May 12, 2000

I left late the following morning (5-12) heading toward Elmira.  It was raining from the time I got up until 11:00 when I finally decided to head out in it anyway.  The sprinkles ended after about a half-hour, but there was a promise of more thunderstorms during the afternoon.  The promise was fulfilled in Waverly – big time thunderstorm.  Note that I didn’t say “between Barton and Waverly.”  I was in town under a huge overhanging roof at a carpet store when the storm hit and only suffered a few sprinkles getting there.  I stayed dry the rest of the way to Elmira, but there are more showers and thunderstorms due tomorrow and Sunday.

Elmira is Mark Twain’s hometown and burial place.  His “study” is located on my map, but I circled the block twice and still didn’t find any trace of it.  The cemetery was easier to find, but I did go almost all the way around it (and it’s a big one) before I found the entrance.  Once inside, there were several signs to guide visitors to Twain’s gravesite. I was expecting an interesting epitaph, but found none at all.
