March 3, 2000

I got a somewhat late start the next morning (3-3) as I was up late finishing and sending the Journal home.  It didn’t really matter, though, as I didn’t have that far to go today.

I’ve been thinking lately that my beard seems out of place here in south Florida.  I mean it’s a winter thing to do, and it just doesn’t seem like winter here despite what the calendar says.  Maybe it’ll be okay when I get to Maine.  In May, it’s still going to be winter up there.

I spent most of the day riding through opulent sections of Palm Beach County—lots of country clubs, strip malls (each with a gallery and a travel store) and especially walled in communities of big condos, each having a cute little guardhouse to keep the riff-raff (bearded guys) out.  I saw one condo building under construction that had prices “starting at $445,000.”  I think I’ll move right in when I’m done riding.

I spent the night at Jonathan Dickinson State Park near Hobe Sound.  After setting up camp, I rode back to Jupiter to get something to eat.  As I came back into the campground I saw a sign at the far end of the parking lot that I wanted to read, so I headed that direction.  About halfway across, I spotted Barry Dobson getting into his RV and hollered at him.  He and Marilyn had just arrived from Florida City, after having spent about three days in the Keys.  I joined them later for dessert and discussion of our respective visits to the Keys.  Of significance, Cat Man is still there, but has become such a hit that he has moved his act down the wharf to a spot in front of the Hilton Hotel.   Barry and Marilyn have become one more set of good friends - we will stay in touch.
