I left Spearfish on June 25, riding on I-90 with the intent
of going to Rapid City, then seeing (feeling?) which way the wind was blowing before
deciding on going any further. (By the way, it is legal to ride bicycles on Interstate
highways in most of the western states.) The shoulder was mostly good, but rough in a few
places. By the time I got to Rapid City, the wind was blowing straight from the South and
I-90 was pointed straight East. I decided to "go for it," with "it"
being the town of Wall, gateway to the Badlands, and about 50 miles distant. With a storm
delay of about one hour (I was safely tucked away under a highway overpass), I arrived in
Wall just as it was getting dark. For the day, I rode 95 miles, and found out later that
the temperature had reached 98 degrees. No wonder I drank so much during the day! |
