On July 6, I rode
a whopping 25 miles but it was all uphill from Loveland to Estes Park. Loveland is
at the base of the Rockies at an elevation of about 5000 feet and Estes Park is in the
mountains at an elevation of about 7500 feet. The road follows the Big Thompson River all
the way and the river is just plain awe-inspiring as it storms down out of the Rockies.
You could stop every three minutes and take a memorable photo along this road. Of
course, you could also stop every three minutes to rest along this road! I ended up
stopping about every 20 minutes, including one nice long break when I sat on a rock in the
river for about 15 minutes cooling my bare feet. Actually, it only took only about a
second to cool my feet, but it felt great to continue anyway. During this time, I was
thinking about Tech Pro, my most recent place of employment, and wondering what I would be
doing right then if I hadnt quit work to take this trip. It would have been about
1:30 in Ohio, and I figured I would probably be taking inventory about then (Hey Paul, how
many 110 volt Visctech motors do we have?). I concluded that Id rather be in
Colorado in the middle of the Big Thompson River than in Ohio in the middle of the monthly
inventory. I smiled broadly. I pinched myself. Yep, its real.
I saw a good bumper sticker
in Estes Park tonight: "A closed mind is a wonderful thing to lose."
