The next day (7-30), I rode just 31 miles
from Browning to St. Mary, at the East entrance to Glacier National Park. I was riding
alongside the Park most of the way and got to enjoy the mountains without yet having
entered the Park. The place is obviously spectacular. At the Visitor Center, where I went
to talk to someone regarding bicycling on the Going To The Sun Highway, I heard John
Muirs words about Glacier: "The time you spend here will not take away from
your life, but rather add to it." Im going to add a couple of days to my life
on this trip, and hopefully come back some day for more.
The other main events of the
day were mosquitoes and the hot tub at the campground. The mosquitoes were among the worst
encountered on the journey and the only ones who attacked me while I was actually riding.
Every time I would slow to below about 10 mph (i.e., going uphill), the mosquitoes would
get me. I finally had to stop and put on repellent, and this was the middle of the day.
The hot tub was very nice, however. It gets cold at night in Glacier NP, and the tub felt
great for a couple of hours in the evening.
