| The next day was another very hot one (nearby Great Falls was
at 102 degrees) and I had a long ride (about 75 miles) from Wolf Creek to Choteau (which I
finally learned to pronounce correctly as "show toe"). The road today was the
"Tween Highway" in between the Rocky Mountains to the west and the Great
Plains to the east. It was a lot of up and down, but no major mountains to climb. I did
encounter one near-miracle - a concrete lined stream of water flowing under the road near
one of the hilltops. At the point where it reached the road, it widened to a 12
diameter basin and "whirlpooled" around until it could escape beneath the road.
It was an ideal place to soak my feet in the cold water. I first thought this was spring
water, but later encountered a canal at an even higher elevation, so I suspect this was an
irrigation outlet from the canal. |
