My last few minutes in Yellowstone (7-24) were spent speeding down the mountain from Mammoth Hot Springs to Gardiner, Montana. I did manage to take one more wildlife photo before I got out of Yellowstone – a poor image of a Bighorn Sheep on a mountain ledge (see those curly horns?).

The rest of the travel day was 53 miles to Livingston following the Yellowstone River. Since it was going downhill, I was also going slightly downhill all day. In the afternoon, I picked up a very favorable wind blowing at 25 or so miles per hour. The net result was that this was like a "day off" from actual biking. No exaggeration, for most of the afternoon, I coasted (no peddling required) at 20 to 24 mph.

The route was terrific. The Yellowstone River is wild and beautiful. It’s a gorgeous green color, with lots of white rapids. At 670 miles long, it is the longest undammed river remaining in the United States, and the only major undammed river in the West.

In Livingston, I had dinner at the Sport Restaurant. The food was great, and I sampled a local favorite, Moose Drool Beer. It was actually very good. The restaurant was Robert Redford’s local favorite during filming of his movie The River Runs Through It in the Livingston area in 1992. The restaurant has also "appeared" in a couple of other movies, and according to their bulletin hosted the likes of Michael Keaton, Jeff Bridges, Peter Fonda, Brad Pitt, Barbara Walters, Dennis Quaid, Buck Henry and Tom Brokaw.
