July 18, 1999

Wow! Today was one great day. If I could give my friends a one-day trip to get the flavor of this journey, it would be today (at least so far). It was not quite as spectacular as the ride through Rocky Mountain NP, but a whole lot easier.

The morning began in Pinedale with a great view of the northern end of the Wind River Range. Riding North, I had views of snow-capped peaks all day to the East, North and West. Maybe South too, but I didn’t look that way often except when I talked to my tent. After 30 miles of very gradual uphill, I came to a spot they simply call "The Rim." From there it was 10 miles downhill facing the Salt and Snake Ranges, then 21 miles downhill to Hoback Junction, following then beautiful Hoback River as it rushed through canyons toward its rendezvous with the Snake River. I then rode 12 miles slightly uphill, following the Snake River, to Jackson and topped off the day by going another 13 miles through Jackson Hole to my campground at Gros Ventre (sounds like Gravant). For the day, it was 85 pretty easy miles in the mountains of Wyoming. The final reward, about three miles north of Jackson was my first full view of the (superlative, superlative, superlative) Teton Range, America’s most beautiful mountain range.
