Leaving Cotulla (1-21), I headed east for Choke Canyon State Park.  I was now on a smaller “back road,” but still a state highway.  There wasn’t much traffic, and not much to look at except lots of Pricklypear cactus (as far as the eye can see) and a few cows.  Cows are almost always afraid of the bicycle, so they won’t stand still to be photographed.  There was one group of four or five that were looking at me so nicely over the fence that I stopped to take their photo.  When I crossed the road, however, they split down the fence-line.  A few hundred feet down the road they gathered again.  This time I took their photo from the far side of the road.

My campground at Choke Canyon was nice, but probably the noisiest place I’ve been.  There was one large group that sang until about 1:30 in the morning, but they were downwind and I couldn’t hear them too well.  Then a group of guys came in late and set up camp right next to me.  They were talking very loud about their duck-hunting exploits and I finally had to get up and ask them to please talk quietly.  The campground was also full of Javalinas (wild pigs) and deer.

Somewhere before Choke Canyon, I passed through the very small town of Fowlerton, and stopped to get something to drink.  I then noticed two nicely lettered signs across the highway.  The first announced that a 300-room motel was “Coming Soon.”  I couldn’t quite believe that, but was still thinking about it when I read the second sign.  It announced that a 150-lane bowling alley was also “Coming Soon.”  It has a number of other funny parts that I hope will show up in the photo, including the developer’s title of “Entremanure.”

Have I mentioned lately that the weather in Texas has been really nice – highs in the lower 80s and lows in the 50s?
