January 19, 2000

The next day (1-19) was more of the same.  The weather was great (79 degrees in Del Rio about noon) and the hills gradually turned into mostly flat land by the time I reached Eagle Pass.  It was a long day, however.  I left the campground about 9:00am, and got to Eagle Pass around 6:00pm, just as the sun was setting.  Counting some distance running around Eagle Pass looking for a place to spend the night (finally found one), I rode 105 miles today.

I passed through the Amistad National Recreation Area (a unit of the National Park Service) in the morning, just northwest of Del Rio.  The word “amistad” means “friendship,” and this is an international recreation area on the United States – Mexico border.  The Recreation Area was created by a dam on the Rio Grande River, and the resulting reservoir is navigable for about 75 miles upstream.  Popular activities for Americans and Mexicans include fishing, water skiing, sailing, scuba diving and swimming.

I saw some orange trees in someone’s yard today.  Initially it just didn’t seem right, but when I thought about it, I was about 300 miles further south than Los Angeles.

Have I mentioned lately that the weather in Texas has been really nice – highs in the upper 70s and lows in the 50s?
