The ride from Hope to Hot Springs (2-2) was pleasant except for all of the log trucks and “oversize load” trucks on U.S. 67.  In fact there were so many “oversize loads” that I think they are doing something sneaky relative to being on U.S. 67 as opposed to I-30 which parallels it through southern Arkansas.  Maybe they don’t have to pay as much for the permit if they avoid the Interstate.  Anyway, it does present one of the more dangerous situations for bicyclists since the trucks think they own the shoulder as well as the highway.

I got a look at the Hope newspaper at a convenience store in Gurdon and noted its description of the snowstorm as the “worst snowfall in 100 years”.  On my way out of Hope, I rode by a large furniture store that had its roof collapse due to the weight of the snow.  There were also a number of chicken houses that collapsed in the area. They just don’t construct buildings down here to withstand the weight of 18” of snow.

I arrived in Hot Springs late afternoon and soon caught up with Mom and Dad Riggle (Helen and Bob) at the Clarion Resort.  They got me a room near theirs and we went out for dinner after determining that my son Aaron (on a business trip in Little Rock) wasn’t going to be able to make it down to Hot Springs that night.
