I
went back to the Yulee Sugar Mill the next morning (2-18).
The ruins here are all that is left of the once
thriving Yulee Plantation, which was burned in May, 1864
by a Union Naval force.
The remnants of the mill include the chimney with
its extending structure covering the boiler, parts of the
grinding machinery and some of the cooking vats. |

Just south of Homosassa Springs, I left US 19 and
took US 98 to Brooksville. I
actually found some small hills along this route.
In Brooksville, I picked up US 41 and followed it all the
way into downtown Tampa. Just
before Tampa, I passed through the town of Land O Lakes.
When I rode by their High School, I couldnt help but
wonder if their sports teams were named the Butter Sticks.
Somewhere along this route, I stopped to pick up a
quarter, lowering my previous standards from the half-dollar
level. Maybe it was
just a reflection of my lowering bank account.

I found Ike and Nates house with no trouble (Nate
had given me very good directions).
No one was home when I arrived, but within about
five minutes Ike was home from work.
He told me that they were getting more company
his Mom and Dad (my First Cousin Janet and her husband
John) and Johns Mother, Doris Jean, were on their way
down and arrived about an hour after I did.
We all had a great evening of conversation, and
Doris Jean took the whole crew out to dinner at the
original Outback Steakhouse, which is only 3 or 4 blocks
from their house. John,
Janet and Doris Jean had just come for a short visit, as
Ike had gotten some free tickets for the Daytona 500 and
invited his Dad, who jumped at the chance.

Ike, Nate and Brians (third roommate) house is a
terrific place for young guys to live.
Theyve got an enclosed party patio complete with
grill, bar, pool table and dartboard, and a large backyard
with a volleyball court and cookout equipment.
They have at least a half-dozen sofas for expected
or unexpected overnight guests.
They also have a lemon tree, a grapefruit tree and an
orange tree in the back yard.
I didnt sample the lemons, but the grapefruit
that I had for breakfast the next morning and the orange I
had for lunch were the best Ive ever tasted.
I had a wonderful time visiting with this part of my
family, and to Janet and John I say on the subject of
raising kids: You done good!
