August 9, 1999
The next morning (8-9) at the
campground, I got to witness what Ill call the "monolithic motorhome
mentality" (hereafter known as "mmm") at its finest. I watched with
interest, as a man "camping" next to us climbed to the top of his motorhome to
adjust his satellite dish. As he fiddled with it, another man at ground level kept him
informed regarding reception. No matter how he turned it, it just didnt seem to get
any better. I then watched with amazement as the man came down, then went back up and
sawed a branch from an overhanging tree that he believed to be interfering with his
reception. How selfish can someone be! |

The bicycle riding for the
day was more of the same one major pass to climb, followed by a nice ride down the
other side. This pass was Loup Loup at 4030, not the highest but one of the
toughest. In thinking back, it seemed to be more steep at the lower levels than the others
and I think we were worn out by the time we got to the last three or four miles when it
got a little more steep again. We stayed the night in Winthrop, which is a real tourist
town. All of the storefronts are in "old west" style, and it reminded me of a
"frontier town" at an amusement park. It seemed like the price of everything was
a little high from groceries to gasoline. |
