Sandra Day O’Connor

Supreme Court Justice

Sandra Day was born in 1930 on a ranch in Arizona.  She spent her summers there with her parents but went to school in Texas where she stayed with her Grandparents.  She was very smart and skipped several grades in school.

She went to college in California and became a lawyer.  She also met and married her husband there.  After graduating, she had difficulty getting a job because she was a woman.  Most people

never thought that a woman could work as a real lawyer.  She finally got a job working for the government.

By 1969 she was elected as a Senator from the state of Arizona.    She was a good listener and was very fair.  People liked what she said.  Five years later she was elected as a judge for the Arizona Superior Court.  She later worked for even higher courts.

In 1981 she was asked by President Reagan to be on the Supreme Court.  It was the highest court in the United States.  She would vote with eight other judges, on the most important cases in the nation.  The president can name his choice but the U.S. Senate has to approve it.  All but one voted for her to be on the Supreme Court.  Sandra Day O’Connor became the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court.

Today she still is a judge on the Supreme Court.  She is a hard worker and thinks for herself.  She will be remembered for making  a new trail for women to follow.
