Rachel Carson

Writer and Environmentalist

Rachel Carson was born in 1907 in Springdale, Pennsylvania.  When she went to school she wanted to study nature and become a writer.  She went to college in Pennsylvania and Maryland.

After college she got a job working for the United States government as a writer and scientist.  She wrote many books about the sea and its animals.

During this time, science was concerned very important.  Everyone thought science would help the land and animals.   Rachel Carson discovered that the bug sprays the scientists made to kill insects were poisoning animals and the Earth.  She wrote the book, Silent Spring telling Americas about this problem.  It took many years to get the government and people to believe this was a problem.  Her work helped the government to make the first laws to protect our land and animals.

Rachel Carson did not want to become a hero.  Her work to make people aware of the environment made her a famous American.
