Maya Lin

Architect and Sculpture

Maya Lin was born in Athens, Ohio in

1959.  Her parents were immigrants

from China and taught at Ohio University.

When she was young she was good at school in math and art. She was a very good student and went to college at Yale University in Connecticut to learn architecture.  Architecture is learning how to design buildings.   She also took classes in sculpting.

While she was in college she entered a contest to design a memorial for the Vietnam War.  Over 1,400 other people entered the contest too.   The memorial was going to be built in Washington, D.C. to honor the men and women who died during this war.  Maya Lin was only 21 years old.

She won the contest and the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial was built in 1982.  It was made out of black granite from India.  The names of 57,661 Americans are engraved on the two walls.  Maya Lin watched over the building of the memorial.  It has become the most visited monument in Washington, D.C.  Today visitors to the wall can make rubbings of these special names.

Maya Lin has gone on to design other memorials and landscape sculptures.  Maya Lin now works in a design studio in New York City and has written a book about her life.
