Helen Keller
Educator
Helen Keller was born in 1880
in Alabama. When she was 19 months old she became very ill. She then became blind, deaf and could not speak.
She was a wild girl but her mother saw that she was very smart. Her mother felt that they needed someone to reach Helen’s mind.
Helen’s mother sent for a special teacher to help Helen. Her name was Anne Sullivan. She
taught Helen how to feel a special alphabet with hand-signs. Later Helen learned how to read using Braille. Anne also helped Helen to speak.
Helen went to schools for the deaf and blind when she was young. She then did something no deafblind person had ever done. She went to college and graduated. All the time Helen was in school, Anne was by her side spelling words into her hand.
Helen loved to write poetry and wrote several books. She spent a lot of time going on tours. She would go to different towns to talk about her life. Anne was always at her side to help her. They were together for 50 years until Anne died.
Helen Keller was famous for overcoming her handicaps. She spent her life trying to help others. She showed everyone that people with disabilities can lead useful lives.
