Introduction

The year is 1907. You are a reporter for the National Geographic Magazine.  Your editor is sending you to Panama to do a story on the new Panama Canal that is currently under construction. Bring plenty of film and bug spray! Have a great time!

The Task

Your editor has asked you for a story on the Panama Canal.  He is requiring that your story is at least 500 words in length.  Also, to keep up the reputation of the magazine he is requiring you have at least 4 different pictures dealing with the Canal. You will need to answer the following questions for your readers:

1.      Where are Panama and the Panama Canal located?

2.    Who wanted to build the Canal and why?

3.    What are the biggest obstacles the workers will encounter as they build the canal?

4.  What are the benefits and drawbacks of building the canal?

As a reporter feel free to add any information you feel is interesting or important for the reader to know. Like how people working on the canal lived.

The Process

To help you write your article there are several articles on the Panama Canal which you can locate on-line in the next section. Read the different articles and take notes to help you answer the questions your editor has given you. Stay organized by taking notes on specific note taking pages given to you by your editor. You will need to turn in your notes with your article on the due date.  It is important that you turn these notes in so you and your editor can be sure that you have not committed plagiary (plagiary is copying someone else’s writing and presenting it as your own). You will need to turn in your article typed and include your pictures in the article (your editor will show you how to do this using “Word” a word processing program).

2.  Did you accurately answer the questions your editor gave you?

3.  Spelling

4.  A minimum of 4 different pictures dealing with the Panama Canal.

5.  Use of good vocabulary. (Example~ instead of writing, “The workers dug the Panama Canal” you could write, “Laborers excavated the Panama Canal.”)

6.  Article is typed with the pictures included in the text.

7.  A list of sources you used to gather information at the end of your article.

Conclusion

When you are finished you will have a typed copy of your article and your research notes ready to be turned into your editor.
