Introduction

No television or VCRs, no cars or bicycles, no computers, no Little League!!!! What would life be like if you lived in the Middle Ages? The Middle Ages refers to the period from the 4th to 5th century and lasted about 1000 years. Let's do a little research and explore what it would be like if you lived back then!  Your team will be responsible for finding information regarding the various topics and presenting your findings at the end of the two-week period.

The Task

When your team finishes, you should have a good idea of what life was like in the Middle Ages. At the end of the two-weeks, each team will make a presentation to explain, demonstrate, and show what you have discovered.  The presentation will be video-recorded for your team to evaluate.  Your research should include such topics as:

In gathering your information, we will be using the Media Center to do research.  Include anything else that would help us understand what life was like back then.

The Process

Working with your 3-4 member team, you will use websites, encyclopedias, books, magazine articles, and any other sources to find your information. Teams will decide which students will cover the different topics/areas.  Be sure to include a timeline and visuals (overheads, graphs, maps)  when appropriate. We will begin team presentations following our two-week research time.  You will need to keep 3x5" cards to enter your information and sources and refer to when making your presentation. Your team should be prepared to answer questions regarding your topic..

Resources

The following websites can be used to find information for your part of the Quest! Be sure to make notes and keep track of your sources. Also, pictures can be used to enhance your Quest presentation.

The Media Center has a wide selection of books and materials that will help you find information on your topic.  When searching the online catalog, be sure to use the subject heading – Middle Ages.  There is also a new encyclopedia set in the reference section entitled Medieval World.

Evaluation

Evaluation will consist of a "team grade" based on the team presentation that will include the information presented from individual research on various topics, and any visuals   or materials to enhance the presentation.  The final presentation should be approximately 15-20 minutes (divided among the team members). Students will be able to ask questions of the presenting team.   Students will self-evaluate the video of their presentation.

Coverage and Accuracy of subject matter 1-40 points
Presentation (individually and group) 1-25 points
Visuals presented (maps, graphs, overheads, etc.) 1-25 points
Questions answering skills /self-evaluation 1-10 points

Conclusion

If you were transported back in time to the Middle Ages , what would you like and dislike, and what would you miss the most  about life compared to living in the present.  What topics did you not find enough information on and what other topics not listed would you like to have researched?

Credits and References

Each student should include all sources they used to gather their information on note cards.  Be sue to give credit to anyone who assisted you outside the school setting.
