Perry’s Monument

Perry’s Monument can be found in

Ohio on South Bass Island in Lake Erie.

 On September 10, 1813, Commodore

Perry defeated and captured a British group

of warships during the Battle of Lake Erie.

The battle, fought during the War of 1812,

helped to end the war between the United

 States and Great Britain.

Perry’s famous words are still with us when he said, “Don’t give up the ship.”

The pink granite monument is the third tallest in the U.S. It was built not only to remember the American naval triumph, but also celebrate the long lasting peace between the U.S. and Great Britain.
