Introduction

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to travel the world?  Have you ever wondered what it would be like to stand under the Eiffel Tower or to go on a safari?  Have you ever wondered how children in other countries live and what it would be like to live their life for even one day? If you have ever wondered about these things then this is the project for you.  You will have the opportunity to travel to a country through the Internet, books, and the media.  This exciting trip will begin in September and end in May.  When you return from your travels in May you will meet with all of your other fellow travelers at a large International Festival.  There you will be greeted by your parents, grandparents, and other people from your community just waiting for you to tell them all about your trip!  It’s time to begin your journey, BON VOYAGE!!!

The Task

International Bazaar is a project that will require your time and effort in researching a country.  You will need to research several different aspects of an assigned country.  The project requires six different reports.  Four of the six reports will be 2-3 pages in length.  The flag and map reports will only need to be a half page long. In addition to the reports you will be required to have a variety of visual aides.  When you are finished with your country project you will be well prepared to teach it to your class. You will also be prepared to participate in a school wide festival called International Bazaar.  Do not throw anything way after its been graded because you will need it for the bazaar day.

The Process

The first step in International Bazaar is to select a country.  The way this is done is to pick three countries that you would like to learn more about.  Give those three “picks” to your teacher and she/he will assign one of those countries to you.

After your country has been assigned to you it would be wise to have a folder marked “International Bazaar” and your country’s name written on it.  Keep all of your information together in this folder DO NOT THROW ANY THING AWAY.

You will be assigned one project at a time over the next several months.  Since this is mostly an “out of school” project you may decide not to wait on the due dates and work ahead on the project, please feel free to do so.  Click here to get the DUE DATES.

Every teacher in the building assigns different parts of the project at different times.  Some teachers may assign the flag and flag report first or they may assign the map first.  On the White team I assign note taking for each report first.

Students are given a packet, which outlines each paragraph for every report. For example, the Land report has six different elements. Each one of those elements should be one paragraph long in this report. (This packet is include on this website so that you may print it out at your convenience.)  They are required to take notes directly into this packet.  Note taking begins with the Land Report, followed by the Economy Report, Culture Report, Government Report, and finally the Flag and Map Reports.

After all the notes have been taken, it is time to begin putting the formal reports together, starting with the Land Report. You may find that you need additional information as you begin your report. If this happens you will need to do further research.  When your Land Report is finished, and turned in by the due date, you will begin the next report. Continue to follow this procedure until all of the reports are finished. Your Land, Economy, Culture, and Government reports should all be about 1˝-3 pages long.  The Flag and Map reports should be at least a ˝ page long.

The students will also be doing required visual aides, which are:

Evaluation

The evaluation process will take place over a period of time.  Each report will have a due date and be graded at that time. (Since due dates for each year will change, you will need to print the “Due Date” sheet off of this internet site and bring it to class so the teacher can personally assign those dates to you.)   The reports will be graded by content and the vast detail of that content.  Each visual aide will be assigned points that will be added into the presentation grade.  The score sheet will be the guideline for all grading.  During the final “Teaching Presentation” the score sheet will be used to evaluate the entire project and the students knowledge of their assigned country.

Conclusion

Please remember that this project cannot be done in one night.  It requires effort on your part to produce a quality project.  We work on it throughout several months of the school year.  Some of it will be done in class but most of it is an out of class research activity!!  You are responsible for acquiring your own information, assembly of that information, and developing the presentation of your country.  Remember that this is done over a period of several months. DO NOT THROW ANYTHING AWAY!!!  At the end of the research and work you will be putting a booth together for bazaar day. The bazaar includes all 6th grade teams.  There will be someone on the other teams displaying your country as well.

If you have used this Web site to your advantage you should be able to accomplish the International Bazaar project successfully.  If you have any questions about this project at any time please feel free to contact me at the school or by e-mail at aseman@ravenna.portage.k12.oh.us.

 Credits and References

Please remember that you will need to list all references used for your reports and visual aides.  This includes all books, music, pictures, text and people you interviewed for these reports.  If other people have helped you with these reports, such as your parents, grandparents, or people you know who come from your “assigned country”, remember to thank them for their help.  It would be nice to send them a thank you note.
