INTRODUCTION

We have just finished exploring one particular food web.  You have discovered that our world is much more complex than we could ever realized.  Our environment is a diverse web.  Grass, crickets, anoles, and owls are interrelated to many other living producers and consumers.  Have you ever wondered about plant and animal survival in the desert?  Consider  animal and plant life in the oceans?  The rainforest would be a diverse environment.  Have you ever imagined the complex life in the plains of Africa or the frigid environment of the arctic?

THE TASK

Through your research in another world you will examine an unfamiliar ecosytem and share your knowledge with your classmates.

THE PROCESS

  1. Select an ecosystem such as deserts, African plains, arctic, marine, rainforest  or any other system with the approval of your teacher.

  2. Complete research via the web or other materials that could be located in the school media center or local library.

  3. Create a food web of your ecosystem.  Include pictures.  Use color.  Show the interconnectedness of the plants and animals in your system.

  4. Make a food chain that includes a producer, primary consumer and secondary consumer.

  5. As a group, make a presentation to the class in a form that you have chosen.  Some suggestions of forms:  poster, shoebox, HyperStudio, research paper or any other approved method.

  6. Include a bibliography of all the resources that you use.

Resources

Evaluation

Ø      25 points for each students participation

Ø      25 points for presentation

Ø      25 points for visuals such as posters, diorama, shoeboxes, research paper, etc.

Ø      25 points bibliography

Conclusion

EXCELLENT JOB!  Imagine the many, many ecosystems that are throughout our world.  Imagine what you would learn if you were suddenly transplanted to another environment.  In the process of your research did you discover other food webs that you would like to study?  Other ecosystems?  Congratulations! You have learned a multitude of information.
