Introduction

·        A group of bird watchers gathered with their binoculars and charts to record a spring bird count. They need help in identifying the birds that live in our area. They have asked for some special assistance from you. You will take on the role of bird watcher. You will gather pertinent data, chart you findings and discover many things about birds and their habitats.

Goal:  You will gather facts, sort data, and identify the birds that live in the schoolyard.

  The Task

o       It is your job to take on the role of bird watcher.

o       You must count and record the number of birds you locate in our schoolyard on one given day and keep the data in a log.

o        You must make a chart depicting all the types of birds that you recorded in you log. You can download pictures or draw you own.

o       In art class you will make paper mache birds – you can choose your favorite bird for this project.

o       You must present your final project to your fellow classmates.

o       Our final bird count will be sent to the National and Ohio Wildlife Federation and to the Audubon Society.

·        You will need your bird chart, bird book, and binoculars, a pencil and blank paper.

·        You will work as an individual bird watcher. We will compare sightings after our watch has been completed.

 

 

 

Goal:  You will design a paper mache  bird and a wall chart showing the birds that you sited. You list facts like; color, size, male, female, food they like, and favorite habitat.

The Process

·        Are you prepared, with all your bird watching gear, to begin you bird watching task?

·        Put on your bird watcher “official” badge and head outside to look, listen, and learn.

·        You will visit the following web sites to complete you final wall chart project.

·        After all data is gathered. You will create a bird watchers wall chart.

·        You will complete your paper mache bird in art class.

·        You will present you completed project to the class – explain the types of birds you sighted in the schoolyard. Explain why you chose the bird for your paper mache art project.

Goal:  You will complete your bird watchers wall chart by compiling data on line and out doors. You will present you findings and art project to the class.

·         Goal:  This information will help students complete their task successfully.

Evaluation

·        You can earn a total of 40 points for your bird watching project.

·        25 points for your wall chart ( must contain the following items: at least five different birds ,identify characteristics, favorite food, and favorite habitat. These can be downloaded pictures or colorful drawings of your own.

·        10 points for your paper mache rendering of your favorite bird. It must be painted in the appropriate colorings for the bird species.

·        5 points for the group count of the total birds found in and around our school yard in one days bird watching.

Goal: You will have a completed project and be able to share your findings with confidence.
