Introduction

Your three person team has just been recruited and signed to a contract by CNN to fill three open positions of  Network Interview Specialist. Your new positions require that you interview Anne Frank, one of the most intriguing personalities of the twentieth century. You will board a time machine located in Mr. Gokee’s classroom and then enter a time warp reserved for your private use. The terminal control for that time machine is the keyboard and screen you are now operating.

The major question you need to answer for you CNN viewers is

"Was Anne Frank’s experiences before, during , and after the Secret Annex typical of what others experienced during the Holocaust?"

It will be helpful to do some background research on the holocaust, World War II, and Anne Frank using resources in addition to the internet links that are already provided including encyclopedias, almanacs, magazines, videos and books to which you have access, including portions of The Diary of Anne Frank.

The Task

Your team will write an introduction and  the script of the interview with your questions and what you believe would be Anne’s answers based on your research. Each Network Interview Specialist will also include two original pieces of  artwork or poetry, appropriate pictures acquired from your time machine WebQuest, and a chart showing the similarities and differences between your interview answers of Anne and her father’s recollections. You can make use of your time machine control terminal, Appleworks 6, color printer, scanner, and digital camera.

The Process

Task 1. The group will define and describe the period in history referred to as the “Holocaust” by researching in the resources and then reporting to each other on the assigned day. A group recorder will keep notes during the reporting. The group will then write an introduction to the interview based on the definition and description of the Holocaust that they have collectively determined. You will answer the question

What is the Holocaust and what does it have to do with Anne Frank?

When your project is completed, you will have a better understanding of the Holocaust and how it affected individuals as they lived through it. You will have conducted an interview with a famous victim who experienced the Holocaust and compared her recollections with her father’s and someone else who survived the horror. When you finish, you will have more answers about this period of history, but let me encourage you to explore the new questions you will also have.

Some general questions to research would be

How does the Holocaust fit into the context of World War II?

Why were the Jews targeted for persecution?

What propaganda techniques were used to convince people that the Jews were a group that deserved persecution?

How does the persecution of those years compare with treatment of Jews  today?
