YOUr PROBLEM

Once upon a time there were three best friends:  Bo-reguard, Borisha and YOU.  They had known each other since first grade and had been through lots of changes together.  they went everywhere together.  Now they are in 7th grade and have been having a lot of fun sleeping over each others' houses, eating pizza, watching videos and just hanging out--like typical teenagers.  But Bo-reguard seems different lately.  then one day when Borisha and YOU went over Bo-reguard's house after school, while his parents were at work, he whips out some beer for everyone to drink.  It seems that he has been sneaking into dad's supply and is downing a can or two of beer a day.  He sees a lot of adults drinking, and figures it is not so bad.  In fact, he thinks he is pretty 'cool.'  About a month later, Borisha and YOU are concerned because you realize that Bo-reguard has a drinking problem.

YOUr Task

Bo-reguard does not like to read, so he must be approached about his drinking problem in a more creative way.  He is, after all, much like Borisha and YOU, a typical Wooster teenager.  He likes to listen to the latest songs, hang posters in his room and read an occasional comic book.  So, Borisha and YOU have to come up with a plan to help him.

So, here is what Borisha and YOU have decided to do:

  1. Become an expert about alcohol use among teens. (research!!!)

  2. Create a comic book or poster that describes alcoholism and where teens can go to get help.

  3. Demonstrate your friendship by writing a note to Bo-reguard convincing him he has a problem and needs help.

  4. Get Bo-reguard's attention by giving him a message he will remember about why alcohol is a risky choice by showing him a music video, skit, or TV commercial that Borisha and YOU have made.

YOUr PROCESS

Determine how you will organize your information in a portfolio that you will make.  You will use this to record all information and activities throughout the project.  You need to include:

1)  title page with first and last name and health period
2)  table of contents listing of what is in portfolio and      where to find each item
3)  research on alcohol questions
4)  alcohol ads with analyzation
5)  comic book or poster
6)  note to friend
7)  rough draft for video, skit or tv commercial
8)  final copy of video, skit or tv commercial

FIRST:  Conduct your research on alcohol and answer each of the following questions:

  1. Why do people choose to drink/not to drink alcohol?

  2. What is in an alcoholic beverage?

  3. How does alcohol travel through the body?

  4. How does alcohol affect the brain?

  5. What are the long-term effects of using alcohol on the body?

  6. Why do people continue to drink when they have a drinking problem?

  7. What are some myths surrounding alcohol?

  8. How does drinking affect unborn babies?

  9. What can you find out about how alcohol affects families?

  10. What are some support groups associated with alcohol abuse?

SECOND:  In your portfolio, create a collection of three different alcohol ads and analyze them using the following questions:

THIRD:  Based upon your research, create a comic book or poster that visually conveys the message you want to get across to Bo-reguard about alcohol being a risky behavior.

FOURTH:  Write a note to Be-reguard trying to convince him he has a problem and where he can go to get some help.

FIFTH:  Determine how you will convince Bo-reguard that alcohol is a risky choice by choosing one of the following approaches:

LAST:  Prepare a presentation for Be-reguard by showing him your music video, skit, or television commercial.

Don't forget your friend has a real problem--his life may depend on you convincing him that he needs help!

YOUr CONCLUSION

After working so hard, have Borinsky and YOU successfully convinced Bo-reguard that he has a drinking problem and needs some help?  Have you given him some suggestions of where to go to get help?  Did you find the materials adequate to complete your task?  What have you learned about alcohol being a risky choice for teens?  What else would/could you do to help Bo-reguard if you had time?
