Introduction

Brrrrrr. It’s cold outside! That makes it the perfect time to find out all we can about Penguins and Antarctica. We will answer questions like:

·        What does the habitat of the penguin look like?

·        How do penguins take care of their young?

·        Why don’t penguins fly?

·        Who  are the predators of the penguin?

·        How do penguins survive in Antarctica?

·        What does Antarctica look like?

·        Who else lives in Antarctica?

·        Who has explored Antarctica? Did Admiral Drake really go there? Who is the real Captain Cook?

·        Is Antarctica a desert?

·        Can humans survive in Antarctica?

These are just some of the things we’ll learn as we embark on our webquest.

The Task

You may choose to research penguins and create an electronic info-book about penguins, or you may choose to research Antarctica and create a PowerPoint presentation teaching your classmates, parents, and others about this interesting continent.

The Process

Penguin Quest

If you choose to research penguins you will first need to follow these steps for a successful presentation.

1.    Develop a list of questions that need to be answered. Working within your group, complete a K-W-L chart to discover what your group already knows about penguins. Next query your group and classmates about what they’d like to learn about this unusual bird

2.    When you’ve completed your list of questions, you can web your questions and then decide who will research each question.

3.    Next begin your research by reading the books in the Penguin Trunk and visiting the websites below (listed under “Resources).  Write the rough draft of your particular topic. When everyone is finished, meet together to peer edit each other’s research and make corrections. After you’ve finished editing and revising, meet with the teacher and make final decisions about how your book should be organized.

4.    Finally, put your book together in Media Weaver. Choose pictures, sounds, and movies that you’ve found during your research. You will present your book to the whole class on Black and White Day.

5.    Provide a list of the resources your used in your presentation with the names of all your group members. Use the APA citation format you learned in class.

Antarctic Adventure

If exploring Antarctica is more interesting to you, follow these steps for a successful presentation.

1.    Travel through this website to learn more about Power Point and how to create a presentation. www.actden.com/pp/

2.    Make a K-W-L chart to discover what your group already knows about Antarctica. Next, develop a list of what you want to learn. Include your classmates in this decision.

3.    After developing your questions, decide which group members will research each question.

4.    Begin your research by visiting the site below. Read the books provided in the Penguin Trunk and complete your research. www.enchantedlearning.com/school/Antarctica/

5.    Assemble each slide by compiling research and photos that relate to your topic.

6.    Meet as a group to storyboard your presentation and peer edit each other’s research.

7.    Enter your slides into Power Point and complete your presentation. You will present your presentations on Black and White Day.

8.    Provide a list of the resources your used in your presentation with the names of all your group members. Use the APA citation format you learned in class.

Conclusion

When you’ve completed your research and participated in Black and White Day you will have a wealth of background knowledge on both Antarctica and Penguins. You will be an expert just like Mr. Popper and Admiral Drake.
