Web Graphics Size Does Matter

Visitors to your Website will leave if download times take too long

The most common reason for long downloads of a Webpage is large graphic filesizes.

Many teachers simply take a digital photo or scanned image and resize to fit on the Webpage failing to realize that the original file and size are still the links that are downloaded by the visitor's Web browser.

To avoid this problem, an image editing program such as Adobe Photoshop Elements© should be used to prepare the image for use on the Web. Within the program you can adjust compression, colors, size in pixels, and balance download times with quality as you compare the two images side by side.

The original digital photograph was 2.25MB, with a resolution of 300DPI, and dimensions of 1024 x 768

By using Photoshop Elements Save for Web feature and selecting JPEG high compression, and dimensions of 150 x 125, the image now has a filesize of 7.59K and downloads in 2 seconds on a 56Kbps modem. No more visitors clicking off your Website after waiting for graphics to download. Remember, Not everyone has a T-1 connection.
