G-Rated Tips for OS X
Timesavers for the Macaholics
To avoid scrolling in the Finder windows, hold down the Option+Apple keys and use the hand icon to move the viewable area.
Panther Keyboard Shortcuts
Refer to System Preferences, then Keyboard and Mouse and select Keyboard Shortcuts.
Revealed are the standard keyboard shortcuts in OS X for screen capture, universal access, keyboard navigation, dock and application support.
Click on the “+” sign under Application Support to add a new shortcut. Try this: define shortcuts for undo, cut, copy and paste commands using the F1, F2, F3 and F4 keys. Be sure to check the box to turn on Full Keyboard Access. Now applications like Microsoft Word will use these new keyboard shortcuts.
iMovie Alert
Inexpensive plug-ins ($5 or less) allow you to add special effects such as chroma keying with video and stills and adding a series of movies that play and move over a base video clip. Go to imovieplugins.com/fxhome.html.
iMovie Tip
Option-drag a video clip into the clip viewer or timeline to create a copy. This leaves the original untouched and does not add to the file size of the iMovie.
PowerPoint Tips (Mac and PC)
To add an equation to a slide, select Insert Menu, click Object and then click Microsoft Equation. Build the equation from the Equation Toolbar, which contains more than 150 math symbols plus fractions, integrals and summations.
Organizational charts can also be created by inserting Microsoft Organization Chart.
To save an object style (such as an arrow) as the default, hold down the control key (Mac) or right mouse button (PC). Click on Set AutoShape Defaults and all new inserted objects will have that formatting.
