My Computer Can Do What?

For PC Users:

Disable Autorun

To prevent a program from running when you insert a CD into your computer, follow this procedure:

  1. Click “Start,” “Run” and type in “GPEDIT.MSC.”
  2. Go to “Computer Configuration,” “Administrative Templates,” “System.”
  3. Locate the entry for “Turn Autoplay Off” and modify it as you desire.

Rename Groups of Files

You can rename many related files all at once in Windows Explorer. Highlight a set of files in a window, then right click on one and rename it. All the other files will be renamed to that name, with individual numbers in brackets to distinguish them. Also, in a folder you can arrange icons in alphabetized groups by clicking “View,” “Arrange Icon by” and “Show in Groups.”

For Mac Users: Changing the Desktop Image

The standard desktop image is blue with some white arcs running through it in a semicircular pattern. To have, for example, your school photo appear:

  1. Choose an image that you would like to use. Any JPEG or PDF file is fine.
  2. From the root of your hard drive, open “Library,” “Desktop Pictures.” A list of the standard Apple desktop images appears. Aqua Blue.jpg is the file you want to replace. Drag it out of the folder to a safe place as a backup (or just rename it).
  3. Drag your own graphic into the Desktop Pictures folder. Rename your file Aqua Blue.jpg. This sleight of hand allows the system to find it during the boot process.
  4. Restart the machine and your new image will appear as the desktop image.
