G-Rated Tips for OS X

Photos as Web Pages

iPhoto can export your photos and albums as Web pages. Select some photos or an album and choose Export from the File menu, then click the Web Page tab. Specify the appearance and dimensions of the thumbnails and images and click Export. Create a new folder with the name you want the Web page to have.

The exported Web pages can also be burned onto a CD, where your photos can be viewed using a Web browser (great for PCs). Be sure to name the Web page folder “Index” so all your friends have to do is double-click on that Web page to begin viewing.

Free Fonts and Icons

Here are a few free ways to beat the January blahs and learn something new for your computer. Icons can be used for projects like personalizing desktop folders and CDs, and fonts are a fun way to dress up your desktop publications.

www.iconfactory.com is great for both free fonts and icons, with links, tips and support for Mac and PC users.

www.fecundity.com/fontmonkey has fonts and links to Truetype converters for the Mac and PC.

In Mac OS X, drag the downloaded font to the Library folder of your hard drive and place it in the Fonts folder. In OS 9 and lower, place the font in the Font folder found inside the System folder.

PC users can download and expand the zipped font file, then open the Control panels in the Start menu. Drag the file to the Fonts folder inside the Control Panels folder.

To attach a new icon to a CD, get info about the icon you want to use, select the icon box and copy. Open the CD (before burning) with Get Info and select the generic CD icon box and paste. After you burn the CD and it mounts to the desktop, your new icon should be associated with it.

PC Tips

To capture an image on your screen, use the Print Screen key, then paste into Word or PowerPoint. To capture only the active window, use the ALT and Print Screen keys.

Great idea for presenting tech lessons.
