| On April 23, 2004, 17 eighth and ninth graders from Coventry Junior High School, Akron, Ohio, set out to capture a day in the life of their community through digital photography. The students that participated in the project were selected because of their identification as superior cognitive gifted students. Parents, school staff, family, and community members volunteered to drive a team of students to various locations to take photographs.
The project was developed and organized through a collaboration between the Coventry Local School District and WNEO PBS 45/49, Kent, Ohio. WNEO PBS 45/49 was looking to collaborate with a school district to develop a positive education program using technology. Coventry Local Schools was looking for an innovative program for their gifted students while strengthening community involvement and relations. Both organizations were able to provide such a program to a group of highly talented students that enthusiastically documented a part of history in their community.
All pictures were taken between the time of 8:00am and 2:00pm on overcast Friday in April throughout the Coventry Local School District area. Local businesses and fellow citizens welcomed the students to photograph them in their daily routines. The students used various digital cameras previously purchased by the school district. Summit Educational Initiative awarded Coventry Local Schools a $500 grant to purchase Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 software for editing the photos.
